What is DBT?

Dialectical behavioral therapy was first developed to help people who experience frequent hospitalizations due to repeated suicide attempts or self-harm behaviors. People who struggle with these behaviors are often diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD. Difficulty regulating emotions, a pattern of intense relationships, and perceptions of pervasive invalidation also go along with the diagnosis of BPD.

People who experience BPD tend to experience dysregulation in all five areas listed below. As you read, see if the following relate to you or your loved one.

  • Behavioral dysregulation (impulsive behaviors that can feel out of control)
    • This could include spending money, sexual behaviors, or other behaviors.
  • Emotional dysregulation (wide emotional swings)
    • People tend to swing from emotional crises to numbness. Sometimes in the same day. Exploding in anger or deeply suppressing anger may be a difficulty from a young age.
  • Cognitive dysregulation (thoughts and perceptions about self and others that are not rational)
    • Such thoughts may be “all or nothing” or “black and white.” They may also have a sense of paranoia about what others think of them or say about them.
  • Interpersonal dysregulation (intense relationship patterns)
    • Some people may find themselves trusting too easily when it’s not safe. Or they may find themselves destroying relationships that are important to them.
  • Self-dysregulation (unstable sense of self)
    • People often feel chronic emptiness and maybe change their style or their personality without ever feeling comfortable with themselves.

DBT is all about helping clients attain a “life worth living.” There is hope, and change is possible. Please see our DBT page for a full description of DBT offerings. Also, please reach out with any questions.
